1 Paul appointed by the divine will to be an apostle of Jesus Christ, and Sosthenes our brother, Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
2 to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who being sanctified by Christ Jesus, are saints by that vocation, to all that any where invoke the name of Jesus Christ, who is both their Lord and ours. To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:
3 grace and peace be with you from God our father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 I continually give thanks to God on your behalf, for the favour he has bestowed on you thro' Jesus Christ; I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.
5 in your being enriched by him in every gift, with all that light and knowledge, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—
6 whereby the testimony we gave concerning Christ was confirmed among you. even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.
7 so that you will be deficient in no gift; during your expectation of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.
8 and God will confirm you to the end, that ye may be unaccused in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 for he, who has called you to the communication of his son Jesus Christ our Lord, will make good his promise. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to maintain all the same doctrine, to suffer no divisions among you; but to be perfectly united in the same mind, and in the same judgment. I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
11 for I have been inform'd, my brethren, by some of Chloe's family, that there are contentions among you. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.
12 I mean that one or other of you cries out "I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas, What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul|; another, “I follow Apollos|; another, “I follow Cephas|; still another, “I follow Christ.”
13 and I of Christ." is the school of Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized into the name of Paul? Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?
14 I thank God, I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius: I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,
15 lest any should say, I had baptized into mine own name. so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. so no one can say that you were baptized in my name.
16 true, I baptized the family of Stephanas: but I don't know that I baptized any other besides. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.)
17 for Christ did not send me to baptize: but to preach the gospel: tho' not with the preaching of the wise, lest the cross of Christ should have been hinder'd in its efficacy. For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
18 For tho' the doctrine of the cross seems folly to those that perish: yet we that are to be saved, do feel its energy is divine. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19 for it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
20 where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputant of this age? has not God prov'd the wisdom of this world to be downright folly. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
21 for whereas the world, with all their learning, did not distinguish the characters of his divine wisdom, in his works, it pleased God to save those who believe, by preaching, which they counted folly. For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
22 while the Jews require signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom: For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
23 we preach Christ crucified, an obstacle to the Jews indeed, and to the Gentiles foolishness: but to those who believe, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
24 both Jews and Gentiles, he is the Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God. but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
25 for this divine doctrine, as foolish and weak as men may think it, far surpasses all their wisdom, and baffles all their power. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
26 for consider, brethren, that not many worldly wise, not many men of power, not many men of birth are among you that are called. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
27 but God hath chosen those who are foolish in the opinion of the world, to confound the wise; and the weak men of the world to confound the mighty: But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
28 those who were looked upon by the world as vile, as despicable, as nothing, these has God chosen to reduce their sufficiency to nothing. God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are,
29 that no man might glory before God; so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. so that no one may boast before him.
30 for from him it is that ye believe in Christ Jesus, whom God has made to us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: that, And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
31 according as it is written, "he that glorieth, should glory in the Lord." so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
