O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage! | 1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! |
Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me. | 2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. |
Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins. | 3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. |
My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear. | 4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. |
My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins. | 5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. |
I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. | 6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. |
A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken. | 7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. |
I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart. | 8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. |
You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh. | 9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. |
My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind. | 10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. |
My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance. | 11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. |
Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery. | 12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. |
But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak. | 13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. |
I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply. | 14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. |
For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God. | 15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! |
I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.” | 16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. |
I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain. | 17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. |
But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done. | 18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. |
I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason. | 19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. |
They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good. | 20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. |
Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God. | 21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! |
Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior. | 22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! |
