This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. I have been sent out to tell others about the life he has promised through faith in Christ Jesus. | 1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, |
I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. Encouragement to Be Faithful | 2To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. |
Timothy, I thank God for you—the God I serve with a clear conscience, just as my ancestors did. Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. | 3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; |
I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again. | 4Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; |
I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. | 5When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. |
This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. | 6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. |
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. | 7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. |
So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News. | 8Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; |
For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. | 9Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, |
And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News. | 10But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: |
And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News. | 11Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. |
That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return. | 12For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. |
Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. | 13Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. |
Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you. | 14That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. |
As you know, everyone from the province of Asia has deserted me—even Phygelus and Hermogenes. | 15This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. |
May the Lord show special kindness to Onesiphorus and all his family because he often visited and encouraged me. He was never ashamed of me because I was in chains. | 16The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: |
When he came to Rome, he searched everywhere until he found me. | 17But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. |
May the Lord show him special kindness on the day of Christ’s return. And you know very well how helpful he was in Ephesus. | 18The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well. |
