New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses because he had married a Cushite woman. | 1Miriam and Aaron rebelled against Moses on account of the Cushite woman that he had married. |
They said, “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us, too?” But the LORD heard them. | 2They asked, "Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn't he also spoken through us?" But the LORD heard it. |
(Now Moses was very humble—more humble than any other person on earth.) | 3Now the man Moses was very humble—more than any person on earth. |
So immediately the LORD called to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam and said, “Go out to the Tabernacle, all three of you!” So the three of them went to the Tabernacle. | 4All of a sudden, the LORD told Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "The three of you are to come out to the Tent of Meeting." So the three of them went out. |
Then the LORD descended in the pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the Tabernacle. “Aaron and Miriam!” he called, and they stepped forward. | 5Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud, stood at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, and summoned Aaron and Miriam. So both of them went forward. |
And the LORD said to them, “Now listen to what I say: “If there were prophets among you, I, the LORD, would reveal myself in visions. I would speak to them in dreams. | 6Then he told the two of them: "Pay attention to what I have to say! When there is a prophet among you, won't I, the LORD, reveal myself to him in a vision? Won't I speak with him in a dream? |
But not with my servant Moses. Of all my house, he is the one I trust. | 7But that's not how it is with my servant Moses, since he has been entrusted with my entire household! |
I speak to him face to face, clearly, and not in riddles! He sees the LORD as he is. So why were you not afraid to criticize my servant Moses?” | 8I speak to him audibly and in visions, not in mysteries. If he can gaze at the image of the LORD, why aren't you afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" |
The LORD was very angry with them, and he departed. | 9Because the LORD was very angry with them, he left, |
As the cloud moved from above the Tabernacle, there stood Miriam, her skin as white as snow from leprosy. When Aaron saw what had happened to her, | 10but when the cloud ascended from the tent, Miriam had become leprous, as white as snow! Aaron turned toward Miriam, and she had leprosy! |
he cried out to Moses, “Oh, my master! Please don’t punish us for this sin we have so foolishly committed. | 11Aaron begged Moses, "I pray my lord, please don't hold this sin against us, since we've acted foolishly and sinned in doing so. |
Don’t let her be like a stillborn baby, already decayed at birth.” | 12Please don't let her be like one of the living dead, who is born with a congenital skin disease." |
So Moses cried out to the LORD, “O God, I beg you, please heal her!” | 13So Moses prayed to the LORD: "O LORD, please heal her." |
But the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had done nothing more than spit in her face, wouldn’t she be defiled for seven days? So keep her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she may be accepted back.” | 14But the LORD told Moses, "If her father had merely spit in her face, wouldn't she be humiliated? She is to be placed in isolation for seven days. After that, she may be brought in." |
So Miriam was kept outside the camp for seven days, and the people waited until she was brought back before they traveled again. | 15So Miriam was isolated outside the camp for seven days and the people didn't travel until Miriam was brought in. |
Then they left Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran. | 16After that, the people traveled from Hazeroth and encamped in the Wilderness of Paran. |
