The LORD now said to Moses,1Later, the LORD told Moses,
“Send out men to explore the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of the twelve ancestral tribes.”2"Send men to explore the land of Canaan that I'm about to give to the Israelis. Send one man to represent each of his ancestor's tribes, every one of them a distinguished leader among them."
So Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He sent out twelve men, all tribal leaders of Israel, from their camp in the wilderness of Paran.3So that's just what Moses did, sending them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the LORD's instructions. All of the men were Israeli leaders.
These were the tribes and the names of their leaders: Tribe Leader Reuben Shammua son of Zaccur4These were their names: From Reuben's tribe, Zaccur's son Shammua;
Simeon Shaphat son of Hori5From Simeon's tribe, Hori's son Shaphat;
Judah Caleb son of Jephunneh6From Judah's tribe, Jephunneh's son Caleb;
Issachar Igal son of Joseph7from Issachar's tribe, Joseph's son Igal;
Ephraim Hoshea son of Nun8From Ephraim's tribe, Nun's son Hoshea;
Benjamin Palti son of Raphu9From Benjamin's tribe, Raphu's son Palti;
Zebulun Gaddiel son of Sodi10from Zebulun's tribe, Sodi's son Gaddiel;
Manasseh son of Joseph Gaddi son of Susi11from Joseph's tribe of Manasseh, Susi's son Gaddi;
Dan Ammiel son of Gemalli12From Dan's tribe, Gemalli's son Ammiel;
Asher Sethur son of Michael13from Asher's tribe, Michael's son Sethur;
Naphtali Nahbi son of Vophsi14from Naphtali's tribe, Vophsi's son Nahbi;
Gad Geuel son of Maki15and from Gad's tribe, Machi's son Geuel.
These are the names of the men Moses sent out to explore the land. (Moses called Hoshea son of Nun by the name Joshua.)16These are the names of the men sent by Moses to explore the land. Moses renamed Nun's son Hoshea to Joshua.
Moses gave the men these instructions as he sent them out to explore the land: “Go north through the Negev into the hill country.17Then he sent them out to explore the land of Canaan. He instructed them, "Go up from here through the Negev, then ascend to the hill country.
See what the land is like, and find out whether the people living there are strong or weak, few or many.18See what the land is like. Observe whether the people who live there are strong or weak, or whether they're few or numerous.
See what kind of land they live in. Is it good or bad? Do their towns have walls, or are they unprotected like open camps?19Look to see whether the land where they live is good or bad, and whether the cities in which they live are merely tents or if they're fortified.
Is the soil fertile or poor? Are there many trees? Do your best to bring back samples of the crops you see.” (It happened to be the season for harvesting the first ripe grapes.)20Examine the farmland, whether it's fertile or barren, and see if there are fruit-bearing trees in it or not. Be very courageous, and bring back some samples of the fruit of the land." As it was, that time of year was the season for the first fruits of the grape harvest.
So they went up and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.21So they went to explore the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, and as far as the outskirts of Hamath.
Going north, they passed through the Negev and arrived at Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai—all descendants of Anak—lived. (The ancient town of Hebron was founded seven years before the Egyptian city of Zoan.)22They went through the Negev and reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak lived. (Hebron had been constructed seven years before Zoan in Egypt had been built).
When they came to the valley of Eshcol, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also brought back samples of the pomegranates and figs.23Soon they arrived in the valley of Eshcol, where they cut a single branch of grapes and carried it on a pole between two men, along with some pomegranates and figs.
That place was called the valley of Eshcol (which means “cluster”), because of the cluster of grapes the Israelite men cut there. The Scouting Report24The entire place was called the Eshcol Valley on account of the cluster of grapes that the men of Israel had taken from there.
After exploring the land for forty days, the men returned25At the end of 40 days, they all returned from exploring the land,
to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported to the whole community what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had taken from the land.26came in to Moses and Aaron, and delivered their report to the entire congregation of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back their report to the entire congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.
This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces.27"We arrived at the place where you've sent us," they reported, "and it certainly does flow with milk and honey. Furthermore, this is its fruit,
But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak!28except that the people who have settled in the land are strong, and their cities are greatly fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak.
The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.”29Amalek lives throughout the Negev, while the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live by the sea and on the bank of the Jordan."
But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!”30Caleb silenced the people on Moses' behalf and responded, "Let's go up and take control, because we can definitely conquer it."
But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!”31"We can't attack those people," the men who were with him said, "because they're too strong compared to us."
So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge.32So they put out this false report to the Israelis about the land that they had explored: "The land that we've explored is one that devours its inhabitants. All the people whom we observed were giants.
We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”33We also saw the Nephilim, the descendants of Anak. Compared to the Nephilim, as we see things, we're like grasshoppers, and that's their opinion of us!"
