New Living Translation | English Standard Version |
From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me. Let all Israel repeat this: | 1“Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth”— let Israel now say— |
From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me, but they have never defeated me. | 2“Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me. |
My back is covered with cuts, as if a farmer had plowed long furrows. | 3The plowers plowed upon my back; they made long their furrows.” |
But the LORD is good; he has cut me free from the ropes of the ungodly. | 4The LORD is righteous; he has cut the cords of the wicked. |
May all who hate Jerusalem be turned back in shameful defeat. | 5May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward! |
May they be as useless as grass on a rooftop, turning yellow when only half grown, | 6Let them be like the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up, |
ignored by the harvester, despised by the binder. | 7with which the reaper does not fill his hand nor the binder of sheaves his arms, |
And may those who pass by refuse to give them this blessing: “The LORD bless you; we bless you in the LORD’s name.” | 8nor do those who pass by say, “The blessing of the LORD be upon you! We bless you in the name of the LORD!” |
