| 1Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.” | 1After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” |
| 2“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.” | 2He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” |
| 3The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about. | 3So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. |
| 4On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. | 4On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. |
| 5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.” | 5Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” |
| 6So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together, | 6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. |
| 7Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” | 7And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” |
| 8“God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together. | 8Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. |
| 9When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. | 9When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. |
| 10And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. | 10Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. |
| 11At that moment the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!” | 11But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” |
| 12“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.” | 12He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” |
| 13Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. | 13And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. |
| 14Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the LORD will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” | 14So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” |
| 15Then the angel of the LORD called again to Abraham from heaven. | 15And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven |
| 16“This is what the LORD says: Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that | 16and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, |
| 17I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. | 17I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, |
| 18And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me.” | 18and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” |
| 19Then they returned to the servants and traveled back to Beersheba, where Abraham continued to live. | 19So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. |
| 20Soon after this, Abraham heard that Milcah, his brother Nahor’s wife, had borne Nahor eight sons. | 20Now after these things it was told to Abraham, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: |
| 21The oldest was named Uz, the next oldest was Buz, followed by Kemuel (the ancestor of the Arameans), | 21Uz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, |
| 22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel. | 22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” |
| 23(Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.) In addition to these eight sons from Milcah, | 23(Bethuel fathered Rebekah.) These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. |
| 24Nahor had four other children from his concubine Reumah. Their names were Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. | 24Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. |
