New King James VersionNew International Version
In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest:
“Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.” ’ ”2This is what the LORD Almighty says: "These people say, 'The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD's house.'"
Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,3Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?”4"Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?"
Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!5Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways.
“You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”6You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it."
Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!7This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways.
Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the LORD.8Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored," says the LORD.
You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the LORD of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.9"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.
Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.10Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops.
For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”11I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands."
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the LORD.12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.
Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, spoke the LORD’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the LORD.”13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: "I am with you," declares the LORD.
So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God,
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month. In the second year of King Darius,
