In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,1On the first day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year, the LORD spoke this message through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak:
“Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.” ’ ”2The LORD who rules over all says this: "These people have said, 'The time for rebuilding the LORD's temple has not yet come.'"
Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,3So the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai as follows:
Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?”4"Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins?
Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!5Here then is what the LORD who rules over all says: 'Think carefully about what you are doing.
“You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”6You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.'"
Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!7"Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'Pay close attention to these things also.
Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the LORD.8Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to build the temple. Then I will be pleased and honored,' says the LORD.
You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the LORD of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.9You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?' asks the LORD who rules over all. 'Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house!
Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.10This is why the sky has held back its dew and the earth its produce.
For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”11Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.'"
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the LORD.12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the LORD their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the LORD their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the LORD.
Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, spoke the LORD’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the LORD.”13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's word to the people: "I am with you!" says the LORD.
So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,14So the LORD energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the LORD who rules over all.
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.15This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year.
