To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. | 2to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord! |
I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, | 3I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day. |
greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, | 4As I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. |
when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. | 5I recall your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you. |
Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. | 6Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands. |
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. | 7For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. |
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, | 8So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God's power accept your share of suffering for the gospel. |
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, | 9He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, |
but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, | 10but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel! |
to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. | 11For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher. |
For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. | 12Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day. |
Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. | 13Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. |
That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. | 14Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us. |
This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. | 15You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. |
The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; | 16May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my imprisonment. |
but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously and found me. | 17But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me. |
The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy from the Lord in that Day—and you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesus. | 18May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus. |
