New King James Version | NET Bible |
And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD. | 1In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites left Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, during the month Ziv (the second month), he began building the LORD's temple. |
Now the house which King Solomon built for the LORD, its length was sixty cubits, its width twenty, and its height thirty cubits. | 2The temple King Solomon built for the LORD was 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet high. |
The vestibule in front of the sanctuary of the house was twenty cubits long across the width of the house, and the width of the vestibule extended ten cubits from the front of the house. | 3The porch in front of the main hall of the temple was 30 feet long, corresponding to the width of the temple. It was 15 feet wide, extending out from the front of the temple. |
And he made for the house windows with beveled frames. | 4He made framed windows for the temple. |
Against the wall of the temple he built chambers all around, against the walls of the temple, all around the sanctuary and the inner sanctuary. Thus he made side chambers all around it. | 5He built an extension all around the walls of the temple's main hall and holy place and constructed side rooms in it. |
The lowest chamber was five cubits wide, the middle was six cubits wide, and the third was seven cubits wide; for he made narrow ledges around the outside of the temple, so that the support beams would not be fastened into the walls of the temple. | 6The bottom floor of the extension was seven and a half feet wide, the middle floor nine feet wide, and the third floor ten and a half feet wide. He made ledges on the temple's outer walls so the beams would not have to be inserted into the walls. |
And the temple, when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built. | 7As the temple was being built, only stones shaped at the quarry were used; the sound of hammers, pickaxes, or any other iron tool was not heard at the temple while it was being built. |
The doorway for the middle story was on the right side of the temple. They went up by stairs to the middle story, and from the middle to the third. | 8The entrance to the bottom level of side rooms was on the south side of the temple; stairs went up to the middle floor and then on up to the third floor. |
So he built the temple and finished it, and he paneled the temple with beams and boards of cedar. | 9He finished building the temple and covered it with rafters and boards made of cedar. |
And he built side chambers against the entire temple, each five cubits high; they were attached to the temple with cedar beams. | 10He built an extension all around the temple; it was seven and a half feet high and it was attached to the temple by cedar beams. |
Then the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying: | 11The LORD said to Solomon: |
“Concerning this temple which you are building, if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk in them, then I will perform My word with you, which I spoke to your father David. | 12"As for this temple you are building, if you follow my rules, observe my regulations, and obey all my commandments, I will fulfill through you the promise I made to your father David. |
And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake My people Israel.” | 13I will live among the Israelites and will not abandon my people Israel." |
So Solomon built the temple and finished it. | 14So Solomon finished building the temple. |
And he built the inside walls of the temple with cedar boards; from the floor of the temple to the ceiling he paneled the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the temple with planks of cypress. | 15He constructed the walls inside the temple with cedar planks; he paneled the inside with wood from the floor of the temple to the rafters of the ceiling. He covered the temple floor with boards made from the wood of evergreens. |
Then he built the twenty-cubit room at the rear of the temple, from floor to ceiling, with cedar boards; he built it inside as the inner sanctuary, as the Most Holy Place. | 16He built a wall 30 feet in from the rear of the temple as a partition for an inner sanctuary that would be the most holy place. He paneled the wall with cedar planks from the floor to the rafters. |
And in front of it the temple sanctuary was forty cubits long. | 17The main hall in front of the inner sanctuary was 60 feet long. |
The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with ornamental buds and open flowers. All was cedar; there was no stone to be seen. | 18The inside of the temple was all cedar and was adorned with carvings of round ornaments and of flowers in bloom. Everything was cedar; no stones were visible. |
And he prepared the inner sanctuary inside the temple, to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there. | 19He prepared the inner sanctuary inside the temple so that the ark of the covenant of the LORD could be placed there. |
The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high. He overlaid it with pure gold, and overlaid the altar of cedar. | 20The inner sanctuary was 30 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 30 feet high. He plated it with gold, as well as the cedar altar. |
So Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold. He stretched gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, and overlaid it with gold. | 21Solomon plated the inside of the temple with gold. He hung golden chains in front of the inner sanctuary and plated the inner sanctuary with gold. |
The whole temple he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the temple; also he overlaid with gold the entire altar that was by the inner sanctuary. | 22He plated the entire inside of the temple with gold, as well as the altar inside the inner sanctuary. |
Inside the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high. | 23In the inner sanctuary he made two cherubs of olive wood; each stood 15 feet high. |
One wing of the cherub was five cubits, and the other wing of the cherub five cubits: ten cubits from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other. | 24Each of the first cherub's wings was seven and a half feet long; its entire wingspan was 15 feet. |
And the other cherub was ten cubits; both cherubim were of the same size and shape. | 25The second cherub also had a wingspan of 15 feet; it was identical to the first in measurements and shape. |
The height of one cherub was ten cubits, and so was the other cherub. | 26Each cherub stood 15 feet high. |
Then he set the cherubim inside the inner room; and they stretched out the wings of the cherubim so that the wing of the one touched one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall. And their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. | 27He put the cherubs in the inner sanctuary of the temple. Their wings were spread out. One of the first cherub's wings touched one wall and one of the other cherub's wings touched the opposite wall. The first cherub's other wing touched the second cherub's other wing in the middle of the room. |
Also he overlaid the cherubim with gold. | 28He plated the cherubs with gold. |
Then he carved all the walls of the temple all around, both the inner and outer sanctuaries, with carved figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. | 29On all the walls around the temple, inside and out, he carved cherubs, palm trees, and flowers in bloom. |
And the floor of the temple he overlaid with gold, both the inner and outer sanctuaries. | 30He plated the floor of the temple with gold, inside and out. |
For the entrance of the inner sanctuary he made doors of olive wood; the lintel and doorposts were one-fifth of the wall. | 31He made doors of olive wood at the entrance to the inner sanctuary; the pillar on each doorpost was five-sided. |
The two doors were of olive wood; and he carved on them figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread gold on the cherubim and on the palm trees. | 32On the two doors made of olive wood he carved cherubs, palm trees, and flowers in bloom, and he plated them with gold. He plated the cherubs and the palm trees with hammered gold. |
So for the door of the sanctuary he also made doorposts of olive wood, one-fourth of the wall. | 33In the same way he made doorposts of olive wood for the entrance to the main hall, only with four-sided pillars. |
And the two doors were of cypress wood; two panels comprised one folding door, and two panels comprised the other folding door. | 34He also made two doors out of wood from evergreens; each door had two folding leaves. |
Then he carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers on them, and overlaid them with gold applied evenly on the carved work. | 35He carved cherubs, palm trees, and flowers in bloom and plated them with gold, leveled out over the carvings. |
And he built the inner court with three rows of hewn stone and a row of cedar beams. | 36He built the inner courtyard with three rows of chiseled stones and a row of cedar beams. |
In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid, in the month of Ziv. | 37In the month Ziv of the fourth year of Solomon's reign the foundation was laid for the LORD's temple. |
And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, the house was finished in all its details and according to all its plans. So he was seven years in building it. | 38In the eleventh year, in the month Bul (the eighth month) the temple was completed in accordance with all its specifications and blueprints. It took seven years to build. |
