| 1The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: | 1Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, |
| 2Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; | 2shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; |
| 3nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; | 3nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. |
| 4and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. | 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. |
| 5Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. | 9Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. | 9But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. |
| 10But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. | 10After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. |
