New King James Version | Christian Standard Bible |
The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: | 1I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed: |
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; | 2Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly; |
nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; | 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. |
and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. | 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. |
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” | 5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, |
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. | 7casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you. |
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. | 8Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. |
Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. | 9Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world. |
But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. | 10The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while. |
To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11To him be dominion forever. Amen. |
By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. | 12Through Silvanus, a faithful brother (as I consider him), I have written to you briefly in order to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! |
She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son. | 13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen. | 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
