New King James Version | International Standard Version |
But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. | 1Now you do not need to have anything written to you about times and dates, brothers, |
For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. | 2for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. |
For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. | 3When people say, "There is peace and security," destruction will strike them as suddenly as labor pains come to a pregnant woman, and they will not be able to escape. |
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. | 4However, brothers, you are not in the darkness, in order that the Day of the Lord might surprise you like a thief. |
You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. | 5For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness. |
Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. | 6Therefore, let's not fall asleep like others do, but let's stay awake and be sober. |
For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. | 7For people who go to sleep, go to sleep at night; and people who get drunk, get drunk at night. |
But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. | 8But since we belong to the day, let's be sober. We must put on the breastplate of faith and love, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. |
For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, | 9For God has not destined us to receive wrath but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, |
who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. | 10who died for us in order that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. |
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. | 11So then, encourage one another and build each other up, as you are doing. |
And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, | 12Brothers, we ask you to show your appreciation for those who work among you, set an example for you in the Lord, and instruct you. |
and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. | 13Hold them in the highest regard, loving them because of their work. Live in peace with each other. |
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. | 14We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are idle, cheer up those who are discouraged, and help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. |
See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. | 15Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Instead, always pursue what is good for each other and for everyone else. |
Rejoice always, | 16Always be joyful. |
pray without ceasing, | 17Continually be prayerful. |
in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. | 18In everything be thankful, because this is God's will for you in the Messiah Jesus. |
Do not quench the Spirit. | 19Do not put out the Spirit's fire. |
Do not despise prophecies. | 20Do not despise prophecies. |
Test all things; hold fast what is good. | 21Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. |
Abstain from every form of evil. | 22Keep away from every kind of evil. |
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 23May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. And may your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—remain blameless when our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, appears. |
He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. | 24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful. |
Brethren, pray for us. | 25Brothers, pray for us. |
Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. | 26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. |
I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren. | 27I order you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. | 28May the grace of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be with you! Amen. |
