Then David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader. | 1David consulted with all his leaders, the commanders of hundreds and of thousands. |
And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is of the LORD our God, let us send out to our brethren everywhere who are left in all the land of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites who are in their cities and their common-lands, that they may gather together to us; | 2Then he said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if this is from the LORD our God, let us spread out and send the message to the rest of our relatives in all the districts of Israel, including the priests and Levites in their cities with pasturelands, that they should gather together with us. |
and let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we have not inquired at it since the days of Saul.” | 3Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of him in Saul's days." |
Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. | 4Since the proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to do it. |
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor in Egypt to as far as the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath Jearim. | 5So David assembled all Israel, from the Shihor of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. |
And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, to Kirjath Jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who dwells between the cherubim, where His name is proclaimed. | 6David and all Israel went to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah) to take from there the ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim. |
So they carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. | 7At Abinadab's house they set the ark of God on a new cart. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart. |
Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets. | 8David and all Israel were dancing with all their might before God with songs and with lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. |
And when they came to Chidon’s threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled. | 9When they came to Chidon's threshing floor, Uzzah reached out to hold the ark because the oxen had stumbled. |
Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God. | 10Then the LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had reached out to the ark. So he died there in the presence of God. |
And David became angry because of the LORD’s outbreak against Uzza; therefore that place is called Perez Uzza to this day. | 11David was angry because of the LORD's outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place Outburst Against Uzzah, as it is still named today. |
David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God to me?” | 12David feared God that day and said, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?" |
So David would not move the ark with him into the City of David, but took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. | 13So David did not bring the ark of God home to the city of David; instead, he diverted it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath. |
The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that he had. | 14The ark of God remained with Obed-edom's family in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his family and all that he had. |
