New International Version | King James Bible |
Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? | 1Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? |
The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, | 2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, |
"Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles." | 3Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. |
The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. | 4He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. |
He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, | 5Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. |
"I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain." | 6Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. |
I will proclaim the LORD's decree: He said to me, "You are my son; today I have become your father. | 7I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. |
Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. | 8Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. |
You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." | 9Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. |
Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. | 10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. |
Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. | 11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. |
Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. | 12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. |
