In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar--when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene-- | 1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, |
during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. | 2Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. |
He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. | 3And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; |
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. | 4As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. |
Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. | 5Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; |
And all people will see God's salvation.'" | 6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. |
John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? | 7Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. | 8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. |
The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." | 9And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
"What should we do then?" the crowd asked. | 10And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? |
John answered, "Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same." | 11He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. |
Even tax collectors came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?" | 12Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? |
"Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them. | 13And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. |
Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay." | 14And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages. |
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. | 15And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; |
John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. | 16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: |
His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." | 17Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. |
And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them. | 18And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. |
But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, | 19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, |
Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. | 20Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. |

and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." | 22And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. |
