New International Version | King James Bible |
At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim, | 1And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations; |
these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). | 2That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar. |
All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea Valley). | 3All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea. |
For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. | 4Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled. |
In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim | 5And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim, |
and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert. | 6And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness. |
Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar. | 7And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar. |
Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim | 8And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim; |
against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar--four kings against five. | 9With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five. |
Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. | 10And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain. |
The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. | 11And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way. |
They also carried off Abram's nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom. | 12And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. |
A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother of Eshkol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. | 13And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram. |
When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. | 14And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. |
During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. | 15And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. |
He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people. | 16And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people. |
After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). | 17And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale. |
Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, | 18And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. |
and he blessed Abram, saying, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. | 19And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: |
And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. | 20And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. |
The king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself." | 21And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. |
But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, | 22And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, |
that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, 'I made Abram rich.' | 23That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: |
I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me--to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share." | 24Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion. |
