A psalm by Asaph. El, God, the LORD speaks, and summons the earth to come from the east and west. | 1A psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. |
From Zion, the most beautiful of all places, God comes in splendor. | 2From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. |
Our God approaches and is not silent; consuming fire goes ahead of him and all around him a storm rages. | 3Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. |
He summons the heavens above, as well as the earth, so that he might judge his people. | 4He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: |
He says: "Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!" | 5"Gather to me this consecrated people, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice." |
The heavens declare his fairness, for God is judge. (Selah) | 6And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice. |
He says: "Listen my people! I am speaking! Listen Israel! I am accusing you! I am God, your God! | 7"Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God. |
I am not condemning you because of your sacrifices, or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me. | 8I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. |
I do not need to take a bull from your household or goats from your sheepfolds. | 9I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, |
For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me, as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills. | 10for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. |
I keep track of every bird in the hills, and the insects of the field are mine. | 11I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. |
Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all it contains belong to me. | 12If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. |
Do I eat the flesh of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? | 13Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? |
Present to God a thank-offering! Repay your vows to the sovereign One! | 14"Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, |
Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!" | 15and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me." |
God says this to the evildoer: "How can you declare my commands, and talk about my covenant? | 16But to the wicked person, God says: "What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips? |
For you hate instruction and reject my words. | 17You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you. |
When you see a thief, you join him; you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives. | 18When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers. |
You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive. | 19You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit. |
You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother. | 20You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother's son. |
When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you! | 21When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you. But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you. |
Carefully consider this, you who reject God! Otherwise I will rip you to shreds and no one will be able to rescue you. | 22"Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you: |
Whoever presents a thank-offering honors me. To whoever obeys my commands, I will reveal my power to deliver." | 23Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation." |
