NET Bible | New International Version |
So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you: | 1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: |
Give a shepherd's care to God's flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God's direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly. | 2Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; |
And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock. | 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. |
Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away. | 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. |
In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. | 5In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." |
And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. |
by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you. | 7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. |
Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. | 8Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. |
Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering. | 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. |
And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. | 10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. |
To him belongs the power forever. Amen. | 11To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. |
Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. | 12With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. |
The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son. | 13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. |
Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. | 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
