So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you:1As a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings, and a partaker of the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you:
Give a shepherd's care to God's flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God's direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly.2Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of compulsion, but because it is God’s will; not out of greed, but out of eagerness;
And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away. 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. 5Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you.
by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.7Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.8Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.9Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.
And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.10And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you.
To him belongs the power forever. Amen. 11To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen.
Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.
The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son.13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does my son Mark.
Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
