For the music director; a well-written song by the Korahites. As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God! | 1For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. |
I thirst for God, for the living God. I say, "When will I be able to go and appear in God's presence?" | 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? |
I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?" | 3My tears have been my food day and night, While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" |
I will remember and weep! For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God, shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival. | 4These things I remember and I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go along with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God, With the voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival. |
Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. | 5Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence. |
I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar. | 6O my God, my soul is in despair within me; Therefore I remember You from the land of the Jordan And the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. |
One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me. | 7Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me. |
By day the LORD decrees his loyal love, and by night he gives me a song, a prayer to the living God. | 8The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, A prayer to the God of my life. |
I will pray to God, my high ridge: "Why do you ignore me? Why must I walk around mourning because my enemies oppress me?" | 9I will say to God my rock, "Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" |
My enemies' taunts cut into me to the bone, as they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" | 10As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me, While they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" |
Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. | 11Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God. |
