On the first day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year, the LORD spoke this message through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak: | 1In the second year of Darius the king, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, |
The LORD who rules over all says this: "These people have said, 'The time for rebuilding the LORD's temple has not yet come.'" | 2"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'This people says, "The time has not come, even the time for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt."'" |
So the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai as follows: | 3Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, |
"Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins? | 4"Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?" |
Here then is what the LORD who rules over all says: 'Think carefully about what you are doing. | 5Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, "Consider your ways! |
You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.'" | 6"You have sown much, but harvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is not enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes." |
"Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'Pay close attention to these things also. | 7Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Consider your ways! |
Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to build the temple. Then I will be pleased and honored,' says the LORD. | 8"Go up to the mountains, bring wood and rebuild the temple, that I may be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD. |
You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?' asks the LORD who rules over all. 'Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house! | 9"You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I blow it away. Why?" declares the LORD of hosts, "Because of My house which lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house. |
This is why the sky has held back its dew and the earth its produce. | 10"Therefore, because of you the sky has withheld its dew and the earth has withheld its produce. |
Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.'" | 11"I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands." |
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the LORD their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the LORD their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence for the LORD. |
Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's word to the people: "I am with you!" says the LORD. | 13Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke by the commission of the LORD to the people saying, "'I am with you,' declares the LORD." |
So the LORD energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the LORD who rules over all. | 14So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, |
This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year. | 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of Darius the king. |
