On the first day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year, the LORD spoke this message through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak: | 1In the second year of the reign of Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, stating |
The LORD who rules over all says this: "These people have said, 'The time for rebuilding the LORD's temple has not yet come.'" | 2that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.’ ” |
So the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai as follows: | 3Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying: |
"Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins? | 4“Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” |
Here then is what the LORD who rules over all says: 'Think carefully about what you are doing. | 5Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways. |
You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.'" | 6You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.” |
"Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'Pay close attention to these things also. | 7This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways. |
Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to build the temple. Then I will be pleased and honored,' says the LORD. | 8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD. |
You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?' asks the LORD who rules over all. 'Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house! | 9You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little. And what you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house. |
This is why the sky has held back its dew and the earth its produce. | 10Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth has withheld its crops. |
Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.'" | 11I have summoned a drought on the fields and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil, and on whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.” |
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the LORD their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the LORD their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD. |
Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's word to the people: "I am with you!" says the LORD. | 13Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message of the LORD to the people: “I am with you,” declares the LORD. |
So the LORD energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the LORD who rules over all. | 14So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and began the work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God, |
This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year. | 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius. |
