| 1(My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous One, | 1My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. | 2and he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world. | 2He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world. |
| 3Now by this we know that we have come to know God: if we keep his commandments. | 3This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands. |
| 4The one who says "I have come to know God" and yet does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in such a person. | 4The one who says, "I have come to know Him," yet doesn't keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. |

| 18Children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. | 24As for you, what you have heard from the beginning must remain in you.
