| 1Why do You stand afar off, O LORD? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? | 1Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? |
| 2In pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. | 2In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. |
| 3For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, And the greedy man curses and spurns the LORD. | 3He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. |
| 4The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him. All his thoughts are, "There is no God." | 4In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. |
| 5His ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are on high, out of his sight; As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them. | 5His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies. |
| 6He says to himself, "I will not be moved; Throughout all generations I will not be in adversity." | 6He says to himself, "Nothing will ever shake me." He swears, "No one will ever do me harm." |
| 7His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness. | 7His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. |
| 8He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the hiding places he kills the innocent; His eyes stealthily watch for the unfortunate. | 8He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; |
| 9He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair; He lurks to catch the afflicted; He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net. | 9like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. |
| 10He crouches, he bows down, And the unfortunate fall by his mighty ones. | 10His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. |
| 11He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He will never see it." | 11He says to himself, "God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees." |
| 12Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. | 12Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. |
| 13Why has the wicked spurned God? He has said to himself, "You will not require it." | 13Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? |
| 14You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Your hand. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. | 14But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. |
| 15Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer, Seek out his wickedness until You find none. | 15Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out. |
| 16The LORD is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land. | 16The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. |
| 17O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear | 17You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, |
| 18To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror. | 18defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. |
