| 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations. | 17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. |
| 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. | 18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. |
| 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. | 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. |
| 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
| 21"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." | 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
| 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: | 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: |
| 23"BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." | 23"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). |
| 24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. |
| 25but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. | 25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. |
