Then these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. | 1So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. |
But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned because he justified himself before God. | 2This kindled the anger of Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram. He burned with anger against Job for justifying himself rather than God, |
And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. | 3and he burned with anger against Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute Job, and yet had condemned him. |
Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were years older than he. | 4Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because the others were older than he. |
And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men his anger burned. | 5But when he saw that the three men had no further reply, his anger was kindled. |
So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite spoke out and said, "I am young in years and you are old; Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you what I think. | 6So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was timid and afraid to tell you what I know. |
"I thought age should speak, And increased years should teach wisdom. | 7I thought that age should speak, and many years should teach wisdom. |
"But it is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding. | 8But there is a spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding. |
"The abundant in years may not be wise, Nor may elders understand justice. | 9It is not only the old who are wise, or the elderly who understand justice. |
"So I say, 'Listen to me, I too will tell what I think.' | 10Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me; I too will declare what I know.’ |
"Behold, I waited for your words, I listened to your reasonings, While you pondered what to say. | 11Indeed, I waited while you spoke; I listened to your reasoning; as you searched for words, |
"I even paid close attention to you; Indeed, there was no one who refuted Job, Not one of you who answered his words. | 12I paid you full attention. But no one proved Job wrong; not one of you rebutted his arguments. |
"Do not say, 'We have found wisdom; God will rout him, not man.' | 13So do not claim, ‘We have found wisdom; let God, not man, refute him.’ |
"For he has not arranged his words against me, Nor will I reply to him with your arguments. | 14But Job has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your arguments. |
"They are dismayed, they no longer answer; Words have failed them. | 15Job’s friends are dismayed, with no more to say; words have escaped them. |
"Shall I wait, because they do not speak, Because they stop and no longer answer? | 16Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply? |
"I too will answer my share, I also will tell my opinion. | 17I too will answer; yes, I will declare what I know. |
"For I am full of words; The spirit within me constrains me. | 18For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me. |
"Behold, my belly is like unvented wine, Like new wineskins it is about to burst. | 19Behold, my belly is like unvented wine; it is about to burst like a new wineskin. |
"Let me speak that I may get relief; Let me open my lips and answer. | 20I must speak and find relief; I must open my lips and respond. |
"Let me now be partial to no one, Nor flatter any man. | 21I will be partial to no one, nor will I flatter any man. |
"For I do not know how to flatter, Else my Maker would soon take me away. | 22For I do not know how to flatter, or my Maker would remove me in an instant. |
