New American Standard Bible 1995 | Berean Study Bible |
Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, | 1As a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings, and a partaker of the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you: |
shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; | 2Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of compulsion, but because it is God’s will; not out of greed, but out of eagerness; |
nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. | 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. |
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. | 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. |
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. | 5Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you. |
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. | 7Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. |
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. | 8Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. |
But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. | 9Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. |
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. | 10And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you. |
To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11To Him be the power forever and ever. Amen. |
Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! | 12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. |
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. | 13The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does my son Mark. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ. | 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
