New American Standard Bible 1995 | English Standard Version |
Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, | 1So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: |
shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; | 2shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; |
nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. | 3not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. |
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. | 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. |
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. | 5Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” |
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, | 6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, |
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. | 7casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. |
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. | 8Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. |
But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. | 9Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. |
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. | 10And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. |
To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. | 11To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. |
Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! | 12By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. |
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. | 13She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ. | 14Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. |
