| 1Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? | 1Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? |
| 2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, | 2The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against his anointed one. |
| 3Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. | 3"Let us break their chains," they cry, "and free ourselves from slavery to God." |
| 4He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. | 4But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. |
| 5Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. | 5Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury. |
| 6Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. | 6For the Lord declares, "I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain." |
| 7I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. | 7The king proclaims the LORD's decree: "The LORD said to me, 'You are my son. Today I have become your Father. |
| 8Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. | 8Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession. |
| 9Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. | 9You will break them with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots.'" |
| 10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. | 10Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! |
| 11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. | 11Serve the LORD with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. |
| 12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. | 12Submit to God's royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities--for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him! |
