King James Bible | New Living Translation |
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader. | 1David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his army. |
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us: | 2Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: “If you approve and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us. |
And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul. | 3It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul.” |
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. | 4The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do. |
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjathjearim. | 5So David summoned all Israel, from the Shihor Brook of Egypt in the south all the way to the town of Lebo-hamath in the north, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. |
And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjathjearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the LORD, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it. | 6Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim. |
And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart. | 7They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart. |
And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets. | 8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets. |
And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled. | 9But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark. |
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God. | 10Then the LORD’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God. |
And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called Perezuzza to this day. | 11David was angry because the LORD’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “to burst out against Uzzah”), as it is still called today. |
And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me? | 12David was now afraid of God, and he asked, “How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?” |
So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. | 13So David did not move the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath. |
And the ark of God remained with the family of Obededom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obededom, and all that he had. | 14The Ark of God remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he owned. |
