King James Bible | English Standard Version |
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: | 1But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. |
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. | 2Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. |
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; | 3Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, |
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, |
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. |
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. | 6Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. |
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, | 7Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, |
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. | 8and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. |
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; | 9Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, |
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. | 10not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. |
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, |
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; | 12training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, |
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; | 13waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, |
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. | 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. |
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. | 15Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. |
