And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. | 16and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Christ. |
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations. |
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. | 18The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit. |
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. | 19So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. |
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. | 20But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. | 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, | 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: |
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. | 23See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated "God is with us." |
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her |
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. | 25but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus. |
