Pay attention to my prayer, God, and do not hide yourself from my appeal. | 1For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; |
Pay attention to me and answer me. I moan and groan in my thoughts, | 2hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught |
because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked. They bring down evil upon me, and in anger they hate me. | 3because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger. |
My heart is trembling within me, and the terrors of death have assaulted me. | 4My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me. |
Fear and trembling have overwhelmed me, and horror has covered me. | 5Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. |
I said, "O, who will give me the wings of a dove, so that I could fly away and live somewhere else? | 6I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. |
Look, I want to flee far away; I want to settle down in the wilderness. Interlude | 7I would flee far away and stay in the desert; |
I want to deliver myself quickly from this windstorm and tempest." | 8I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm." |
Confound them, Lord, and confuse their speech, because I have seen violence and strife in the city. | 9Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city. |
Day and night they prowl around its walls; evil and iniquity are within it. | 10Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it. |
Wickedness is at the center of it; fraud and lies never leave its streets. | 11Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets. |
For it is not an enemy who insults me— I could have handled that— nor is it someone who hates me and who now arises against me— I could have hidden myself from him— | 12If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide. |
but it is you— a man whom I treated as my equal— my personal confidant, my close friend! | 13But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, |
We had good fellowship together; and we even walked together in the house of God! | 14with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers. |
Let death seize them! May they be plunged alive into the afterlife, for wicked things are in their homes and among them. | 15Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them. |
I call upon God, and the LORD will deliver me. | 16As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me. |
Morning, noon, and night, I mulled over these things and cried out in my distress, and he heard my voice. | 17Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. |
He calmly ransomed my soul from the war waged against me, for there was a vast crowd who stood against me. | 18He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me. |
God, who is enthroned from long ago, will hear me and humble them. Interlude Because they do not repent, they do not fear God. | 19God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change-- he will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God. |
Each of my friends raises his hand against his allies; each of my friends breaks his word. | 20My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant. |
His mouth is as smooth as butter, while war is in his heart. His words were as smooth as olive oil, while his sword is drawn. | 21His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords. |
Cast on the LORD whatever he sends your way, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. | 22Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. |
But you, God, bring them down to the Pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful people will not live out half their days. But I put my full confidence in you. | 23But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you. |
