Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened in this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they lived together she was discovered to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. |
Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her secretly. | 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. |
After he had thought about it, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. "Joseph, son of David," he said, "don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. |
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins." | 21"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." |
Now all this happened to fulfill what was declared by the Lord through the prophet when he said, | 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: |
"See, a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel," which means, "God with us." | 23"BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." |
When Joseph got up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary as his wife. | 24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, |
He did not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son; and he named him Jesus. | 25but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. |
