International Standard VersionKing James Bible
"Ephraim feeds on the wind, chasing after the eastern winds, storing up lies and desolation day after day. They are making a contract with the Assyrians, and sending oil to Egypt.1Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
The LORD accuses Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; he will repay him for what he does.2The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.
He circumvented his brother in the womb, and as an adult he fought with God.3He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
He even fought the angel and won; he cried and prayed to him. Then at Bethel he found him, and there he spoke with us—4Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us;
the LORD God of the Heavenly Armies— the LORD is his name. 5Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial.
So you, return to your God; guard grace and justice, and look to your God always.6Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
"Now as for the merchant, deceitful balances remain in his hand, and he loves to defraud.7He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.
Ephraim claims, 'I have become rich, I have made a fortune! Because of all my wealth, no one will find any iniquity or sin in me.'8And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
"Yet I remain the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. I will make you live in tents again, as in the festival of that name. 9And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
I spoke to the prophets, giving revelation after revelation, and employing parables in the prophetic writings. 10I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
"There's iniquity in Gilead, isn't there? They have become truly vain. They sacrifice bulls in Gilgal; their altars are like piles of stone in furrowed fields.11Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
Jacob fled into the land of Aram; Israel served there to obtain his wife, tending sheep to gain his wife.12And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.
"By a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was rescued.13And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
Ephraim has stirred up violent anger; therefore the guilt of his blood will remain on him, and his Lord will repay him for his contempt."14Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.
