In those days Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim1And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
waged war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, as well as the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).2That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
All of these came as allies to the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea).3All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.
They were subject to Chedorlaomer for 12 years, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 4Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 5And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
and the Horites in the mountains of Seir, as far as El-paran by the wilderness. 6And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.
Then they came back to invade En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they defeated all the territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar. 7And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.
Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and lined up for battle in the Valley of Siddim8And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;
against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar--four kings against five. 9With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.
Now the Valley of Siddim contained many asphalt pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them, but the rest fled to the mountains.10And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.
The four kings took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food and went on. 11And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
They also took Abram's nephew Lot and his possessions, for he was living in Sodom, and they went on. 12And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
One of the survivors came and told Abram the Hebrew, who lived near the oaks belonging to Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol and the brother of Aner. They were bound by a treaty with Abram. 13And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.
When Abram heard that his relative had been taken prisoner, he assembled his 318 trained men, born in his household, and they went in pursuit as far as Dan.14And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.
And he and his servants deployed against them by night, attacked them, and pursued them as far as Hobah to the north of Damascus. 15And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
He brought back all the goods and also his relative Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the other people. 16And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley).17And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.
Then Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine; he was a priest to God Most High.18And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
He blessed him and said: Abram is blessed by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 19And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
and I give praise to God Most High who has handed over your enemies to you. And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 20And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people, but take the possessions for yourself." 21And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand in an oath to Yahweh, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 22And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
that I will not take a thread or sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you can never say, 'I made Abram rich.'23That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
I will take nothing except what the servants have eaten. But as for the share of the men who came with me--Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre--they can take their share." 24Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
