1And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand! | 1I looked again, and there was a man with a measuring line in his hand. |
2Then I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.” | 2I asked, "Where are you going?" He replied, "To measure Jerusalem in order to determine its width and its length." |
3And behold, the angel who talked with me came forward, and another angel came forward to meet him | 3At this point the angelic messenger who spoke to me went out, and another messenger came to meet him |
4and said to him, “Run, say to that young man, ‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of people and livestock in it. | 4and said to him, "Hurry, speak to this young man as follows: 'Jerusalem will no longer be enclosed by walls because of the multitude of people and animals there. |
5And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory in her midst.’” | 5But I (the LORD says) will be a wall of fire surrounding Jerusalem and the source of glory in her midst.'" |
6Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north, declares the LORD. For I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heavens, declares the LORD. | 6"You there! Flee from the northland!" says the LORD, "for like the four winds of heaven I have scattered you," says the LORD. |
7Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon. | 7"Escape, Zion, you who live among the Babylonians!" |
8For thus said the LORD of hosts, after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye: | 8For the LORD who rules over all says to me that for his own glory he has sent me to the nations that plundered you--for anyone who touches you touches the pupil of his eye. |
9“Behold, I will shake my hand over them, and they shall become plunder for those who served them. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent me. | 9"I am about to punish them in such a way," he says, "that they will be looted by their own slaves." Then you will know that the LORD who rules over all has sent me. |
10Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the LORD. | 10"Sing out and be happy, Zion my daughter! For look, I have come; I will settle in your midst," says the LORD. |
11And many nations shall join themselves to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. | 11"Many nations will join themselves to the LORD on the day of salvation, and they will also be my people. Indeed, I will settle in the midst of you all." Then you will know that the LORD who rules over all has sent me to you. |
12And the LORD will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land, and will again choose Jerusalem.” | 12The LORD will take possession of Judah as his portion in the holy land and he will choose Jerusalem once again. |
13Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling. | 13Be silent in the LORD's presence, all people everywhere, for he is being moved to action in his holy dwelling place. |
