English Standard Version | NET Bible |
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. | 1For the music director; a well-written song by the Korahites. As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God! |
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? | 2I thirst for God, for the living God. I say, "When will I be able to go and appear in God's presence?" |
My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” | 3I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?" |
These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. | 4I will remember and weep! For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God, shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival. |
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation | 5Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. |
and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. | 6I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar. |
Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. | 7One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me. |
By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. | 8By day the LORD decrees his loyal love, and by night he gives me a song, a prayer to the living God. |
I say to God, my rock: “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?” | 9I will pray to God, my high ridge: "Why do you ignore me? Why must I walk around mourning because my enemies oppress me?" |
As with a deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” | 10My enemies' taunts cut into me to the bone, as they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" |
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. | 11Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention. |
