English Standard Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. | 1Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. |
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. | 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. |
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. | 3For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. |
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, | 4For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, |
so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. | 5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. |
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; | 6Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; |
if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; | 7if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; |
the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. | 8or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. |
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. | 9Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. |
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. | 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; |
Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. | 11not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; |
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. | 12rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, |
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. | 13contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. |
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. | 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. |
Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. | 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. |
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. | 16Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. |
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. | 17Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. |
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. | 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. |
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” | 19Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. |
To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” | 20"BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD." |
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. | 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. |
