| 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. | 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations. |
| 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. | 18The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit. |
| 19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. | 19So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly. |
| 20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. | 20But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |

| 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: | 22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: |
| 23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). | 23See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated "God is with us." |
| 24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, | 24When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her |
| 25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. | 25but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus. |
