| 1Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. | 1Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. |
| 2We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. | 2Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. |
| 3And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, | 3We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. |
| 4endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. | 4And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. |
| 5This hope will not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. | 5And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. |
| 6For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. | 6When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. |
| 7For rarely will someone die for a just person--though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. | 7Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. |
| 8But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. | 8But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. |
| 9How much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath. | 9And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. |
| 10For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. | 10For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. |
| 11And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation. | 11So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. Adam and Christ Contrasted |
| 12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all people, because all sinned. | 12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. |
| 13In fact, sin was in the world before the law, but sin is not charged to a person's account when there is no law. | 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. |
| 14Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the likeness of Adam's transgression. He is a type of the Coming One. | 14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. |
| 15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man's trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift which comes through the grace of the one man Jesus Christ overflowed to the many. | 15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. |
| 16And the gift is not like the one man's sin, because from one sin came the judgment, resulting in condemnation, but from many trespasses came the gift, resulting in justification. | 16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. |
| 17Since by the one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive the overflow of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. | 17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. |
| 18So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is justification leading to life for everyone. | 18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. |
| 19For just as through one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so also through the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. | 19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous. |
| 20The law came along to multiply the trespass. But where sin multiplied, grace multiplied even more | 20God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. |
| 21so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness, resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. |
