and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Christ.16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.
So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Christ, fourteen generations.17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated "God is with us."23"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").
When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord's angel had commanded him. He married her24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. And he named him Jesus.25But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
