The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests living in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.1The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,
The word of the LORD came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah.2to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.
It also came throughout the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month.
The word of the LORD came to me:4Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,
I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations.5"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations."
But I protested, "Oh no, Lord GOD! Look, I don't know how to speak since I am only a youth."6Then I said, "Alas, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, Because I am a youth."
Then the LORD said to me: Do not say, "I am only a youth," for you will go to everyone I send you to and speak whatever I tell you.7But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am a youth,' Because everywhere I send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak.
Do not be afraid of anyone, for I will be with you to rescue you. This is the LORD's declaration.8"Do not be afraid of them, For I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD.
Then the LORD reached out his hand, touched my mouth, and told me: I have now filled your mouth with my words.9Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.
See, I have appointed you today over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.10"See, I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms, To pluck up and to break down, To destroy and to overthrow, To build and to plant."
Then the word of the LORD came to me, asking, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I replied, "I see a branch of an almond tree."11The word of the LORD came to me saying, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" And I said, "I see a rod of an almond tree."
The LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I watch over ?my word to accomplish it."12Then the LORD said to me, "You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it."
Again the word of the LORD came to me asking, "What do you see?" And I replied, "I see a boiling pot, its lip tilted from the north to the south."13The word of the LORD came to me a second time saying, "What do you see?" And I said, "I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north."
Then the LORD said to me, "Disaster will be poured out from the north on all who live in the land.14Then the LORD said to me, "Out of the north the evil will break forth on all the inhabitants of the land.
Indeed, I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms of the north." This is the LORD's declaration. They will come, and each king will set up his throne at the entrance to Jerusalem's gates. They will attack all her surrounding walls and all the other cities of Judah.15"For, behold, I am calling all the families of the kingdoms of the north," declares the LORD; "and they will come and they will set each one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls round about and against all the cities of Judah.
"I will pronounce my judgments against them for all the evil they did when they abandoned me to burn incense to other gods and to worship the works of their own hands.16"I will pronounce My judgments on them concerning all their wickedness, whereby they have forsaken Me and have offered sacrifices to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.
"Now, get ready. Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them or I will cause you to cower before them.17"Now, gird up your loins and arise, and speak to them all which I command you. Do not be dismayed before them, or I will dismay you before them.
Today, I am the one who has made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land--against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population.18"Now behold, I have made you today as a fortified city and as a pillar of iron and as walls of bronze against the whole land, to the kings of Judah, to its princes, to its priests and to the people of the land.
They will fight against you but never prevail over you, since I am with you to rescue you." This is the LORD's declaration.19"They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD.
