So these three men quit answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. | 1So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. |
Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite from the family of Ram became angry. He was angry at Job because he had justified himself rather than God. | 2This kindled the anger of Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram. He burned with anger against Job for justifying himself rather than God, |
He was also angry at Job's three friends because they had failed to refute him and yet had condemned him. | 3and he burned with anger against Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute Job, and yet had condemned him. |
Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were all older than he. | 4Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because the others were older than he. |
But when he saw that the three men could not answer Job, he became angry. | 5But when he saw that the three men had no further reply, his anger was kindled. |
So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite replied: I am young in years, while you are old; therefore I was timid and afraid to tell you what I know. | 6So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was timid and afraid to tell you what I know. |
I thought that age should speak and maturity should teach wisdom. | 7I thought that age should speak, and many years should teach wisdom. |
But it is the spirit in a person--the breath from the Almighty--that gives anyone understanding. | 8But there is a spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding. |
It is not only the old who are wise or the elderly who understand how to judge. | 9It is not only the old who are wise, or the elderly who understand justice. |
Therefore I say, "Listen to me. I too will declare what I know." | 10Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me; I too will declare what I know.’ |
Look, I waited for your conclusions; I listened to your insights as you sought for words. | 11Indeed, I waited while you spoke; I listened to your reasoning; as you searched for words, |
I paid close attention to you. Yet no one proved Job wrong; not one of you refuted his arguments. | 12I paid you full attention. But no one proved Job wrong; not one of you rebutted his arguments. |
So do not claim, "We have found wisdom; let God deal with him, not man." | 13So do not claim, ‘We have found wisdom; let God, not man, refute him.’ |
But Job has not directed his argument to me, and I will not respond to him with your arguments. | 14But Job has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your arguments. |
Job's friends are dismayed and can no longer answer; words have left them. | 15Job’s friends are dismayed, with no more to say; words have escaped them. |
Should I continue to wait now that they are silent, now that they stand there and no longer answer? | 16Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply? |
I too will answer; yes, I will tell what I know. | 17I too will answer; yes, I will declare what I know. |
For I am full of words, and my spirit compels me to speak. | 18For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me. |
My heart is like unvented wine; it is about to burst like new wineskins. | 19Behold, my belly is like unvented wine; it is about to burst like a new wineskin. |
I must speak so that I can find relief; I must open my lips and respond. | 20I must speak and find relief; I must open my lips and respond. |
I will be partial to no one, and I will not give anyone an undeserved title. | 21I will be partial to no one, nor will I flatter any man. |
For I do not know how to give such titles; otherwise, my Maker would remove me in an instant. | 22For I do not know how to flatter, or my Maker would remove me in an instant. |
