Now Elijah the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, in whose presence I stand, there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!"1Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As surely as the LORD lives—the God of Israel before whom I stand—there will be neither dew nor rain in these years except at my word!”
Then the word of the LORD came to him:2Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah:
"Leave here, turn eastward, and hide at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.3“Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there."4And you are to drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
So he proceeded to do what the LORD commanded. Elijah left and lived at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.5So Elijah did what the LORD had told him, and he went and lived by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and he would drink from the wadi.6The ravens would bring him bread and meat in the morning and evening, and he would drink from the brook.
After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.7Some time later, however, the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
Then the word of the LORD came to him:8Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
"Get up, go to Zarephath that belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman who is a widow to provide for you there."9“Get up and go to Zarephath of Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”
So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering wood. Elijah called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a cup and let me drink."10So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks. Elijah called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, so that I may drink.”
As she went to get it, he called to her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand."11And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread.”
But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I don't have anything baked--only a handful of flour in the jar and a bit of oil in the jug. Just now, I am gathering a couple of sticks in order to go prepare it for myself and my son so we can eat it and die."12But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I have no bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
Then Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid; go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf from it and bring it out to me. Afterward, you may make some for yourself and your son,13“Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small cake of bread from what you have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for yourself and your son,
for this is what the LORD God of Israel says, 'The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the surface of the land.'"14for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be exhausted and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the face of the earth.’ ”
So she proceeded to do according to the word of Elijah. Then the woman, Elijah, and her household ate for many days.15So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and there was food every day for Elijah and the woman and her household.
The flour jar did not become empty, and the oil jug did not run dry, according to the word of the LORD he had spoken through Elijah.16The jar of flour was not exhausted and the jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Elijah.
After this, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. His illness got worse until he stopped breathing.17Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
She said to Elijah, "Man of God, why are you here? Have you come to call attention to my iniquity so that my son is put to death?"18“O man of God,” said the woman to Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
But Elijah said to her, "Give me your son." So he took him from her arms, brought him up to the upstairs room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.19But Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "LORD my God, have you also brought tragedy on the widow I am staying with by killing her son?"20Then he cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her son to die?”
Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times. He cried out to the LORD and said, "LORD my God, please let this boy's life come into him again!"21Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
So the LORD listened to Elijah, and the boy's life came into him again, and he lived.22And the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah, and the child’s life returned to him, and he lived.
Then Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upstairs room into the house, and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive."23Then Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your son is alive,” Elijah declared.
Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know you are a man of God and the LORD's word from your mouth is true."24Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is truth.”
