Berean Study Bible | NET Bible |
You must carefully follow every commandment I am giving you today, so that you may live and multiply, and enter and possess the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers. | 1You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors. |
Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments. | 2Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not. |
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. | 3So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth. |
Your clothing did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. | 4Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years. |
So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you. | 5Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you. |
Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him. | 6So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him. |
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks and fountains and springs that flow through the valleys and hills; | 7For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills, |
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey; | 8a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey, |
a land where you will eat food without scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper. | 9a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper. |
When you eat and are satisfied, you are to bless the LORD your God for the good land that He has given you. | 10You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you. |
Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day. | 11Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today. |
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses in which to dwell, | 12When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses, |
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all that you have is multiplied, | 13when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything, |
then your heart will become proud, and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. | 14be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery, |
He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness with its venomous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint. | 15and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and |
He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper. | 16fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you. |
You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.” | 17Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth." |
But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day. | 18You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day. |
If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish. | 19Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated. |
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God. | 20Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him. |
