Berean Study BibleEnglish Standard Version
You must carefully follow every commandment I am giving you today, so that you may live and multiply, and enter and possess the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers.1“The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers.
Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments.2And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.
So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.5Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you.
Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him.6So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks and fountains and springs that flow through the valleys and hills;7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills,
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,
a land where you will eat food without scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper.9a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
When you eat and are satisfied, you are to bless the LORD your God for the good land that He has given you.10And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.
Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day.11“Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses in which to dwell,12lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all that you have is multiplied,13and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,
then your heart will become proud, and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.14then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,
He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness with its venomous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.15who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock,
He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper.16who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.
You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.”17Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’
But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day.18You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.19And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.20Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.
