You must carefully follow every commandment I am giving you today, so that you may live and multiply, and enter and possess the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers.1"All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.
Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments.2"You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3"He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.4"Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.
So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.5"Thus you are to know in your heart that the LORD your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, walking in His ways and fearing Him.6"Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks and fountains and springs that flow through the valleys and hills;7"For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;
a land where you will eat food without scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper.9a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
When you eat and are satisfied, you are to bless the LORD your God for the good land that He has given you.10"When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.
Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day.11"Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today;
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses in which to dwell,12otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them,
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all that you have is multiplied,13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies,
then your heart will become proud, and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness with its venomous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.15"He led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He brought water for you out of the rock of flint.
He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper.16"In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.
You might say in your heart, “The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.”17"Otherwise, you may say in your heart, 'My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.'
But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers even to this day.18"But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.19"It shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.
Like the nations that the LORD has destroyed before you, so you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God.20"Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so you shall perish; because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.
